Barbara Ala’alatoa has more than 35 years’ experience in teaching, and working across the education sector. Her experience includes lecturing at Auckland College of Education and co-ordinating schooling improvement at the Ministry of Education. Ms Ala’alatoa was also involved in the Minister of Education’s Cross Sector Forum as co-chair of the Leadership and Quality Teaching work stream. Barbara is currently Principal at Sylvia Park Primary School. Amongst other achievements in this role she has created a team that has designed a unique home school partnership based on the sharing of data in a comprehensive and methodical way with whanau. This work has resulted in significant shifts in student achievement and is currently being rolled out in clusters of schools from Auckland to Christchurch. This year she was appointed as Chair of the Education Council Aotearoa New Zealand.
