The main ingredient: Socio-political consciousness as a component of culturally relevant pedagogy
October 17, Saturday
10:45 - 12:00
209 (Art Block)
Culturally relevant teaching includes educating students about societal injustices that may affect them, so that they can overcome and even change them. This session will explore the key components of culturally relevant teaching with a focus on socio-political consciousness. Through examples from St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States, and the Northland of New Zealand, as well as a broader academic perspective, we will discuss the rationale for helping students develop socio-political consciousness and how teachers can do so in their classrooms.
